“Vincent Peel, his family and the crew of the steamer “Everett” was destroyed in a violent April storm on the Mississippi River. The “Everett” was owned by Captain Peel, and his partner at the time H.S. Rand. This narrative will describe the events of the that tragic day, along with other information reported about the life of Captain Peel and his family by the Saturday Evening Post and The Hawkeye Gazette of Burlington, Iowa. The tragedy occurred at the head of Otter Island about six miles north of Burlington on the Mississippi River 18 April 1889. Captain Peel and his crew of sixteen where heading forty miles upriver, to Boston Bay to obtain a raft of logs for the Burlington Lumber Company.”

The two men who where well known Steamboat Captains on the Mississippi River for many years. They lived in Burlington, Iowa in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Captain Thomas Peel’s daughter Luella Peel was the Principle of Old Coarse Elementary School in Burlington, Iowa for many years. The other captain was Vincent Peel whose death in 1889 was a well documented. Story of the time when he and his daughter Mary (Peel) Bell and granddaughter Veltira Peel where killed when his steamboat the “Everett” was capsized by a storm.

Fairview School 1929,that was on Hwy. 99 in Benton Twp., Sec. 26, north of Burlington. The teacher Miss Florence Hussel.  The names of the children  include Hosteens, Schmeisers, Oetkens, Franks, Youngmans, Laues, Millers, Woodruffs, Moyers, and Deen. Silas Deen is the second boy from the right of the teacher. I want to thank Lynn Kopatich the names and location of the school

Need any information about Jorgen Petersen, the above two photos who immigrated from Denmark to United States in late 1800's. Friend of Ludwig "Louis" and Laure Gronnebeck who lived in West Burlington, died in 1938 and are buried in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. umpetersen@hotmail.com
